The ACES Strategic Planning Committee Report  10/07

This report contains recommendations regarding the ACES Mission statement and ACES Strategic Plan. Committee membership includes David M. Kleist, Kathryn Douthit, Melodie Frick with consultation provided by Kurt Kraus. Report submitted by David M. Kleist.

Strategic Plan: Our process

Premise for changes: First we solidified the mission statement, confirmed the vision statement still flowed from the mission statement, and then went to examine the present iteration of the strategic plan.  Our committee was guided to revise the mission statement based on the following definition of mission statement:

A mission statement is a brief description of a company's fundamental purpose. A mission statement answer's the question: "Why do we exist?" The mission statement articulates the company's purpose both for those in the organization and for the public.

The development of the mission statement was constructed against the following definition of vision statement:

A vision statement is a company's inspiration, the framework for all strategic planning. A vision statement does not tell how an organization will get to the future; it does set the direction for planning. Unlike the mission statement, a vision statement is for the company, not for the public.

The Strategic Plan from 2004 was seen as cumbersome and lofty in the goals outlined. The committee's task was to narrow the strategic objectives down to 3 (versus the 5-6 that currently existed) and then the tactics also down to 3 with the focus on specificity, measurability, and attainability. Specific tactics are still needed finalization.
